Airbus installs suite of Satcom Direct cabin connectivity electronics in corporate jet

Engineers at the Airbus Corporate Jet Centre (ACJC) in Toulouse, France, have installed on an Airbus ACJ320 corporate jet the Satcom Direct Router (SDR), two SD WiFi Hubs, and SD GlobalVT – marking the first time an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) integrated the SD solutions together into a complete cabin connectivity solution.

The newly released SD WiFi Hub is a wireless access point that, when installed with the SDR in large cabin aircraft, expands capability and enhances connectivity performance, such as enabling the Internet to be used to make telephone calls. The Hub adds additional interfaces where needed, simplifying the installation and improving Wi-Fi coverage in the cabin, and supports high-definition media products and applications for all passengers, eliminating buffering and gaps in cabin coverage by providing up to an additional 900 Mbps data to the cabin with both 2.4 and 5 Ghz 802.11n radios. At 1-inch high, the SD WiFi Hub has a small and light form factor, which contributes to the ease of installation.

The SD products allow for optimum performance of smartphones, laptops, and tablets during flight. Passengers can make and receive calls, text, and e-mail, connect to the Internet and stream data — items that are often imperative in corporate jets.

“We’re seeing increasing demand for our products on narrow- and wide-body aircraft. Clients choose SD not only for the performance and reliability of our products, but also because of our ongoing technical support. Many passengers rely on connectivity in the air so it needs to be robust, reliable and resilient. With this suite, Airbus is assured of providing a state-of-the-art solution to these needs,” says SD Chief Commercial Officer Chris Moore.

Satcom Direct (SD) provides global connectivity solutions for business and general aviation, military, government, and heads of state aircraft, as well as operations in areas with connectivity limitations such as remote locations, large scale events, and disaster recovery. SD is a technology innovator. Since 1997, its teams have worked to advance the technology of connectivity, making SD the first in the marketplace to deliver numerous advancements and capabilities. The company is a premier Inmarsat Distribution Partner (including Jet ConneX), Iridium Service Partner, ViaSat Yonder’s preferred reseller, and the Exclusive Service Provider for SmartSky Networks.

The SD world headquarters and primary operations center is located in Melbourne, Florida, with additional office locations in the United States, Canada, U.K., U.A.E., Switzerland, Hong Kong, Australia, Russia, Brazil, and South Africa.
